Cellular and Molecular Radiation Oncology Laboratory

The research topics of our lab belong to two main themes:

  1. Strategies for enlarging the therapeutic window through biological modulation of the cellular radiation sensitivity. Radioprotection of normal cells by gene therapeutic overexpression of MDR-1 and other genes. Radiosensitization of tumour cells by modulation of signal transduction pathways.
  2. Studies of the biological effect of high single doses and low-energy X-rays used in intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT). Genetic factors of the radiation repsonse and their influence on individual clinical radiation sensitivity of the normal tissue.

The laboratory is based in the Centre for Medical Research (ZMF) and is equipped for experimental work in cell- and molecular biology including work under biological safety level S2 conditions. Available methods include RT-PCR, real-time PCR, mRNA microarray analysis, Western blotting, Immuno cytochemistry, flow cytometry, gene transfer and cell culture. A 6 MV linear accelerator as well as a 50 kV Intrabeam® X-ray machine are available for cell irradiations in the radiotherapy department. A 150 kV X-ray machine with imaging is available for conformal irradiation of animal models.
